Take a guided walking tour in one of Wellington’s heritage gems, and hear the stories behind the headstones.
Karori Cemetery, opened in 1891, is vast and set in a rolling landscape, posing challenges for gravediggers, undertakers, and mourners. The tours set the cemetery in its historical context, illuminate aspects of funeral rites and procedures, and bring to life – so to speak – some of those who were buried in the period 1891-1940. Various themes are covered – including national memorials, Prime Ministers, notable women, the 1918 ‘flu epidemic, and those identified as “accidentally killed”, and a little bit of murder too.
Tours are scheduled every day throughout the week (weather permitting). Cost $10 per person, tours duration 1.5 hours.
